چکیده

We provide a comprehensive analysis of the out-of-sample predictive accuracy of different global vector autoregressive (GVAR) specifications based on alternative weighting schemes to address global spillovers across countries. In addition to weights based on bilateral trade, we entertain schemes based on different financial variables and geodesic distance. Our results indicate that models based on trade weights, which are standard in the literature, are systematically outperformed in terms of predictive accuracy by other specifications. We find that, while information on financial linkages helps improve the forecasting accuracy of GVAR models, averaging predictions by means of simple predictive likelihood weighting does not appear to systematically lead to lower forecast errors.

Implications of Cointegration for Forecasting: A Review and an Empirical Analysis

Cointegration has different theoretical implications for forecasting. Several empirical studies have compared the out of sample forecasting performance of cointegrted VECMs against unrestricted VARs in levels and in differences. The results of these studies have been generally mixed and inconclusive. This paper provides a comprehensive review over the subject, and also examines the effects...

VARMA versus VAR for Macroeconomic Forecasting

In this paper, we argue that there is no compelling reason for restricting the class of multivariate models considered for macroeconomic forecasting to VARs given the recent advances in VARMA modelling methodology and improvements in computing power. To support this claim, we use real macroeconomic data and show that VARMA models forecast macroeconomic variables more accurately than VAR models.

The Two-sided Weibull Distribution and Forecasting Financial Tail Risk

A two-sided Weibull is developed to model the conditional financial return distribution, for the purpose of forecasting Value at Risk (VaR) and conditional VaR. A range of conditional return distributions are combined with four volatility specifications to forecast tail risk in four international markets, two exchange rates and one individual asset series, over a four year forecast period that ...

Weighting in Information Retrieval Using Genetic Programming: A Three Stage Process

This paper presents term-weighting schemes that have been evolved using genetic programming in an adhoc Information Retrieval model. We create an entire term-weighting scheme by firstly assuming that term-weighting schemes contain a global part, a term-frequency influence part and a normalisation part. By separating the problem into three distinct phases we reduce the search space and ease the ...

Value-at-Risk Performance of Stochastic and ARCH Type Volatility Models: New Evidence

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of selected volatility models in forecasting Value-at-Risk (VaR) for 1-day and 10-day horizons. The latter is the actual reporting horizon required by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, but not considered in existing studies. The autoregressive stochastic volatility (Taylor, 1982) is found to be less effective than simpler ARCH type models such as...
